Project description:

In Honduras 1.1 million families, (4 million people) still cook over traditional open fires inside their homes. 51% of the population lacks access to a clean cookstove with89% of these people living in rural areas. Deforestation occurs at a rate of 3.1% one of the highest in Latin America and 65% of Hondurasโ€™s energy comes from fuelwood.

In response, the Honduran Government launched the national clean cookstove Vida Major program as an opportunity to spur the growth of the clean cookstove movement across Latin America, raise awareness about clean cooking, and create access to cookstoves for millions of Hondurans from the disadvantaged to the working-class populations.

In 2015, through a unique public-private-social partnership, project developers joined together to design and locally produce a high-quality clean cookstove customized to the needs of Honduras people. They developed a factory in Honduras to locally manufacture stoves creating over200 jobs.

In addition, they trained professional field technicians on stove installation and consumer education. Together, they selected the qualified families, organized the delivery logistics, and installed stoves in households across the country. Finally, they established a customer care center to ensure families liked the stove and used it.
